Figure 13-28. Modified Filter Action and resulting Dashboard behavior
NOTE
Note that you might need to move the Year slider at the bottom back to 2012 to get the
map to show only one year.
We can use all Sheets in this way to filter other sheets. Instead of using the Use as Filter
shortcut, we can also just go to Dashboard Actions and create a new action.
If we want to highlight marks so that the other marks fade instead of getting filtered out, we
can do that with Highlight Actions, as we'll explore next.
Highlighting Sheets
At first glance, the bottom timeline is very difficult to read. There are 204 lines of seven dif-
ferent colors, so it's not easy to see any one line. We can filter out the lines to only show one
color by using the Region Quick Filter , but it would be nice to just highlight all of the lines
from one of the Regions so that the other lines could still be seen in the background to
provide additional context.
One way to do this is to use the color legend to highlight all of the Sheets on the Dashboard.
If we click on the down arrow in the upper-right corner of the Legend and select Highlight
Selected Items , then we'll get the behavior shown in Figure 13-29 . All of the Marks in the se-
lected Region are now showing prominently, and the Marks associated with the other Re-
gions are faded.
