In-Depth Information
Filter
Take away all records that don't belong in a selected subset and only show those records
that do apply. For example, clicking on a single country circle on the map limits the
timeline to show only the line for that country.
Highlight
Make the corresponding measure show more prominently in other Sheets by fading all
other measures. For example, hovering over a single country circle on the map makes it
easy to spot the corresponding country in the bar chart by fading out all other countries.
URL
Open a web page either in the browser or in the Dashboard itself when the user clicks a
mark that is connected to a specific URL. For example, clicking on a country circle opens
a Wikipedia page of that country.
We'll consider the first two Action types in this chapter and the third in the next chapter.
There are two types of Dashboard objects that can be used to trigger actions: Sheets and
Quick Filters.
NOTE
Note that Parameters don't trigger Dashboard Actions, per se; they change the data that is
shown based on how they were used in the Sheets that include them.
Quick Filters on Dashboards
There are currently two Quick Filters on the Dashboard: Region and Year. By default, they
only control their “source” Sheet—the Sheet with which they were brought into the Dash-
board. For example, the Region Quick Filter was brought in with the Map Sheet, so selecting
Africa only changes what is shown in the map. As Figure 13-21 shows, the other two Sheets
still show all of the Regions.
