Figure 13-16. Adding a URL hyperlink to a Dashboard Image object
The logo is a good feature to add to a dashboard, provided that it serves a useful purpose.
Adding frivolous images or “clipart” is not recommended, as it will only serve to detract
from the data. As we discussed in Chapter 11 , images and icons can be rich sources of emo-
tional content, so they're a double-edged sword: they can do much good or much harm, de-
pending on how they're used.
“Hover for More Info” icons
A small icon that provides detailed instructions and information when the user hovers over it
can be a useful feature to add to an exploratory dashboard, especially when there's high com-
plexity. Tableau doesn't allow us to add a tooltip to an Image object, so we'll need to jump
through a few hoops to make a feature like this. It involves creating a new Sheet with a shape
mark that has a tooltip. Here are the steps involved:
1. Create the icon image that you'd like to use and add it to a new folder in Documents
My Tableau Repository Shapes . I named my folder Hover , and I'll be using
this:
2. Create a new Sheet in your Tableau Workbook and rename it Info or something like
that.
3. Create a new Calculated Field, give it the name Info (or whatever you want to call it)
and enter some simple text in quotes, like “Info.”
4. In the new Sheet, change the Marks type from Automatic to Shape and drag the Info
Calculated Field to the Shapes card.
5. Change the Shape from the default ring shape to your chosen shape by clicking the
down arrow in the Shape legend, selecting Edit Shape , and navigating to your new
Hover folder, as shown in Figure 13-17 .
