Database Reference
In-Depth Information
While these different contexts may call for slightly different approaches, the fundamental
way in which people interpret, or decode, data visualizations remains the same. Showing
more than one data visualization in a particular view, such as in a data dashboard, means that
the viewer must perform multiple decoding operations, which likely requires more effort on
the viewer's part.
How much effort is your audience willing to put forward, and how much do they expect (or
need) to get in return? The answer is different for different contexts.
Summary
In this chapter, we compared the act of creating dashboards to cooking. In both disciplines,
it's easy to assume that more is better and thereby spoil the result. We also defined the vari-
ous types of dashboards.
In the next chapter, we'll create some basic Dashboards in Tableau, and in the final chapter,
we'll consider some more advanced usages.
