It's hard to say which does a better job of communicating the two variables, the dual-axis
map or the dual-encoded circle map. They both are probably adequate, and a choice of which
to use likely comes down to a matter of preference. To me, the dual-encoded circle map
shown in Figure 10-23 is easier to read, because (by definition) the dual-axis map in Fig-
ure 10-21 involves occlusion of marks, as the circles are overlaid on the country shapes. For
this reason, it feels more “jumbled” to me, which increases the intimidation factor upon
viewing it for the first time.
Summary
In this chapter, we created a number of different map types in Tableau without ever dealing
directly with GIS shapefiles or having to find latitude and longitude coordinates. We com-
pared symbol maps and filled maps, and found ways to show more than one quantitative
measure at a time.
In the next chapter, we'll dive into some more advanced mapping topics.
