A Dual-Encoded Circle Map
The second way to show both variables on a single map is to use the fact that we can encode
measures to two different shape properties in Tableau: color and size.
Let's return to the circle map we created earlier in the chapter (see
Figure 10-9
)
. If we review
this first version of the circle map, we'll notice that we encoded circle size by the rate of In-
ternet users per 100, and we encoded circle color with region. Instead, let's duplicate this
sheet (right-click on the
Sheet
tab and select
Duplicate Sheet
), and rearrange the pills to en-
code number of Internet users to size and rate of usage to color, as follows:
1. Remove
Region
from the Marks card area so that it no longer encodes circle color
(click the blue
Region
pill and drag and drop it back into the Dimensions area).
2. Change the Marks type from
Automatic
to
Circle
.
3. In the Marks card area, click the
Size
icon next to the green
AVG(B: Internet users
(per 100))
pill (shown as two rings), and change this encoding to
Color
, as indic-
ated in
Figure 10-22
.
4. Change the color palette to
Orange-White-Blue Diverging
, starting a 0 and ending at
100.
5. Drag the calculated field
B: Internet Users (calculated)
to the Size shelf.
6. Increase the size of the circles.
