In-Depth Information
as compared to Queens, the inhabitants of New York County are much more tightly packed.
Richmond has both the fewest inhabitants as well as the lowest population density.
This isn't any different than the comparisons we were able to make with the bar chart shown
in
Figure 2-12
(the borough names have been replaced with county names), but the map
provides the added benefit of being able to know
where on the planet
these place names are
located. That's valuable.
When Marks Multiply
We've made a very simple map: there are only five circles on it. What does it look like if we
create a map with a lot of marks? Let's try it out.
Because the world is a bigger place than just New York City, let's take a look at some global
numbers: the growth of the Internet, by country, from 2000 to 2010. The data is available as
part of the World Bank Indicators sample set that comes along with Tableau Desktop. Open a
new workbook, click
Connect to Data
and find
Sample - World Bank Indicators (Excel)
in
the
Saved data sources
section.
Let's build our circle map by taking the following steps:
1. Double-click on
Country / Region
in the Dimensions area.
2. Drag the Measure called
B: Internet users (per 100)
to the Size card.
3. Drag the Dimension
Region
to the Color card.
4. Click on the down arrow in the Region color legend area and change
The Americas
to blue and
Other
to pink. (This is a matter of preference, but I prefer using primary
colors as much as possible.)
Let's pause and take a look at what we have, shown in
Figure 10-6
