The next step is to use another table calc: the running total. Hover the cursor over the green
SUM(HR)
pill in the Rows shelf, and when the small down arrow appears within the pill, click
on it. In the menu that pops up, go to
Quick Table Calculation
and select
Running Total
. The
view changes to show a cascading set of horizontal lines. Each player's home run number
starts at a height that equals the sum of all of the preceding players' home runs, and grows
accordingly. All we need to do now is fill in the columns and add a Grand Total column at
the far right.
The trick with the waterfall chart is to create a calculated field that is the negative of the
Measure you are charting. This will allow you to create columns that stretch from each hori-
zontal line
down
to the previous level.
Right-click on
HR
, click
Create Calculated Field
, name it
HR(rev)
and enter
HR*-1
in the
Formula area. Drag this new field onto the
Size
mark, and the columns fill in, creating the
cascading view we're looking for.
To finish the view, click
Analysis
→
Totals
→
Show Row Grand Totals
. The total column
appears to the far right. To get the Yankee look and feel, change the color of the bars to dark
