viewing/wildlife (29.8 per cent), mountain (26.2 per cent), urban (18.4 per cent),
adventure/sport (15.6 per cent), conference/business (12.4 per cent),
highway/roadside (8.3 per cent), or beach/coastal (7.8 per cent). A small number
of enterprises were desert based (2.3 per cent), offering casinos or gaming (1.4
per cent), with a health spa or golf (0.9 per cent each).
Support by third-parties
CBTEs were asked whether there was a contact partner or champion agency
involved.This might be an organization or company that helps the enterprise with
funding or heavily supports it in some way. Institutions might include non-
governmental organizations (NGOs), donors, tourism enterprises or tour
operators. Over half the enterprises reported receiving support from a third party
(55 per cent), and most of these were aided by an NGO (17.89 per cent of enter-
prises) or a destination management organization (DMO) (9.17 per cent
enterprises) (see Table 13.2). For example, all of the CBTEs assessed in Tanzania
received support from the Tanzanian Tourism Board. Interestingly, only 5 per cent
of CBTEs were supported by a community-based organization, such as a
community trust.
Business administration
Most described themselves as budget accommodation (71.9 per cent) or mid-
range (28.1 per cent). There were no luxury or high-end CBTEs in the sample. A
review of the prices charged for accommodation at the CBTEs indicates that
most enterprises charge per person, per night, rather than per unit or space. The
average per person high season prices ranged from $31.24 for a room, $12.83 for
a dormitory and $11.69 for camping (see Table 13.3). There is little variation
between low and high season prices for rooms, dormitories and campsites: the
