Figure 13.1 Room capacity of CBTEs (number of rooms, and % of enterprises)
Facilities and services
Nearly half the enterprises were Bed and Breakfasts (47.7 per cent) or campsites
where people bring their own tents (44.5 per cent). Traditional chalets (24.8 per
cent) were also frequently identified, in addition to game lodges, guest houses and
homestays (17.4 per cent each), self catering flats (11.5 per cent), backpackers
(10.6 per cent), campsites with electricity (6.0 per cent) or with fixed tents (5.5
per cent). Only a small proportion of the enterprises were hotels (4.1 per cent) or
campsites without electricity (2.3 per cent). Some of the CBTEs had more than
one type of accommodation (e.g. backpackers and camping). Most of the enter-
prises were small, with 1 to 5 rooms or units (49.5 per cent) (see Figure 13.1).
The enterprises cumulatively offered 4146 beds or spaces (i.e. for camping),
with capacity for 6531 people to stay (see Table 13.1). The World Travel and
Tourism Council's Tourism Satellite Accounts estimate that there were 27.4
million overnight international visitors in southern Africa in 2007 (see
www.wttc.travel/eng/Research/Tourism_Satellite_Accounting_Tool/index.php).
Therefore only a tiny fraction of these visitors could possibly be accommodated
by CBTEs in the region.
The themes of most of the enterprises was cultural (67.4 per cent) and rural
(55.0 per cent), followed by natural area/park (47.3 per cent), safari/game
