Source: 2003 Relly (2004b), 2007 - Author Survey
Apart from SMMEs engaged directly in the reserve, the study does not account
for the various financial and non-financial benefits arising in the villages outside
of the game reserve, nor does it assess non-cash benefits included in the remuner-
ation of employed staff members (more relevant to higher paid staff members
who, depending on seniority, receive more than a basic unemployment benefit
contribution, i.e. private medical aid, private pension contributions, free meals,
motor vehicle allowances and accommodation for family are the principal
benefits). If it were possible to research and quantify guidelines (for a broader
variety of benefits and multipliers) suggested in the SNV/ODI Toolkit (Ashley,
2006), it is likely that a monetized figure for value added to local community
could be in excess of $4.3million per annum.
