Wilderness Camp.The courses and skills concerned in both cases were broadly an
even mixture of hospitality/waiting skills, computer skills, higher education
degrees and a smaller number were management and financial skills. 61 per cent
of households surveyed in Mqobela ( N = 59) were members of social or commu-
nity organizations (such as the safety committee or the church) as opposed to just
4.2 per cent ( N = 168) in the Mathenjwa community sample.
In stage two 'b' semi-structured interviews were conducted with a purposeful
sub-sample of individuals from the household survey for more in-depth qualita-
tive analysis.The individuals were chosen so as to be representative of the range of
livelihoods present in the original sample of the community in the study site. In
stage four, two participatory events were held in each community to provide
forums so that as large a number and as wide a spectrum of the community as
