The research was designed to determine the level of tourism characteristic
products; that is 'those products which in most countries would cease to exist in
meaningful quantities, or those for which the level of consumption would be
significantly reduced in the absence of visitors' (UN et al, 2000, 35). Within the
proposed KAZA TFCA, the only tourism characteristic products were consid-
ered to be accommodation and tour operations. Other usual tourism
characteristic products were not considered as few are provided by operators
within the region and it was expected that much of their economic impact would
leak out of the KAZA region (being felt at either the national or international
level). Induced and indirect impacts were expected to be small, as is characteristic
of relatively small and non-diverse economies, and so were not considered in
determining the baseline.
A survey of accommodation establishments and tour operators was
conducted in 2004, in northern Botswana (focusing along the Chobe River and in
nearby areas, but excluding the Okavango Delta), in Livingstone and along the
Upper Zambezi (Zambia), in parts of Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe), and in the
Caprivi Region of Namibia. Almost 60 per cent of accommodation establish-
ments and almost 40 per cent of tour operators open for trading in 2004 were
surveyed (see Table 8.1). Logistical issues meant that only the nine largest hotels
in Victoria Falls were able to be surveyed, and no tour operators in that town were
surveyed, thus the results reported below are likely to underestimate the impor-
tance of the town as a tourist hub. A total of 30 tour operators were surveyed,
although only 26 of these were trading in 2004; the results reported below are
only for those enterprises that were operational during 2004. As a result of the
omission of tour operators in Victoria Falls, the results reported for the tour
operator sector (and thus the tourism industry as a whole) are likely to be under-
estimated.
Where results are reported below as being 'local' (e.g. 'local employment') this
was considered to be an area within the country in question falling within the
