the average size for all supplying companies appeared to be around 200, this was
skewed by a few large companies employing thousands. Once companies of over
1000 employees or less than five were excluded, the average company size was
around 50 employees.The buyer in the leisure business had objected to shifting to
small suppliers because of the increased workload that this was expected to create,
but the survey demonstrated that Spier was already procuring from small and
medium companies (as shown in Table 6.4). In fact, 78 per cent of Spier suppliers
actually had less than 50 employees. Indeed, 56 per cent of all suppliers reviewed
had less than 20 employees.
