Figure 6.2 Example for one company: calculating and representing scores
economic empowerment activities while at the same time scored for their spend-
ing on payroll as well as the level of recycling carried out by the business.
Capturing and scoring this required two things: a technical tool for data analysis,
and decisions on the relative weighting of Spier's values.
An input tool was developed which recorded all the data for statistical
purposes, and applied a balanced scorecard approach. Suppliers' answers were
scored in each of the nine categories. In each category, the maximum score was 5,
and the target score set by Spier ranged from 2.5 to 4. In most cases, 2.5 would
represent compliance with legal requirements.
For each supplier the category scores were totalled and converted to an overall
percentage which gives the supplier's score. For example, the company shown in
Figure 6.2 scored 23.48 out of a total available of 45, thus getting a percentage
score of 52 per cent. This company fell short of the target score of 30.
The upper half of Figure 6.2 shows how category scores and the overall score
were calculated. The bottom half shows how this was visually represented on a
spider diagram which compares achieved scores relative to a pre-determined
