In addition, Frey's (2007a) study found that only 17 per cent of tourism
businesses have an HIV/Aids policy in place. This number is disconcertingly low
given the high level of awareness and urgency regarding the current HIV/Aids
pandemic in South Africa. The tourism industry, which is highly labour-intensive
and people-orientated, should be at the forefront of ensuring that employees and
tourists have the necessary information and protection with regards to a social
health problem that is at the centre of public debate. Once more, the South
African tourism industry seems to be slow in reacting to a rapidly changing
marketplace.
