bedded and meaningful, that put food at the centre of economies and societies, and
at the same time ensure that the growing and raising of food happens in ways that
improve the environmental systems of the planet. Environmental limits are speak-
ing: there is only the one planet. If people and their policy makers cannot be per-
suaded of this central and urgent proposition, then we are clearly in trouble. We
have to produce muh more food whilst doing no harm; we have to persuade riher
people to eat less or at least eat sensibly; we have to find ways to eliminate the trav-
esty of persistent and widespread hunger.
