In-Depth Information
food agenda relies on the market to determine the nature and structure of the glob-
al food system. The common reference to market laws and forces implies, however,
that a more just and flexible food system is too complicated and that it will sort itself
out. he food crisis of 2006-2008 (whih we are revisiting in 2011) is strong evidence
that when things are let to sort themselves, a lot of people get rih and many more
go hungry. The question is then, is this the kind of world we want to live in? The
emerging consensus from experts and governments is, 'No, it's not; and here's what
we can do about it'. Imagining an alternative food utopia is a first step. And it is an
inclusive step. Instead of entrenhing enemy positions, the collaborative imagining
of an ideal global food system can foster muh needed discussion. It is in suh an
imagining of a more just and flexible world of food - one that is appealing and ac-
ceptable to a broader segment of the global population - that we are most likely to
get there.
