of Western economic globalization and climate hange in 'fringe economies' and
'isolated states' is likely to increase the appetite of SIDS to develop local food pro-
duction and regional solutions for resource management as a means to mitigate
threats to food security and social and economic development. A sense of urgency
seems to be emerging at the level of civil society and local government that a do-
mestic food supply network integrating urban and rural producers must no longer
be undervalued at the national level. The capacity of developing countries to ensure
their own equitable and accessible supply of food, to nurture human capital, will de-
termine their potential for social and economic development.
Notes
1. Global hange, or economic globalization and climate hange, is a broad reference to processes
occurring at a global scale that have consequences on all scales
2. The Government of Samoa is negotiating with the World Trade Organization (WTO), its terms
of membership. Part of this process hinges on Samoa graduating from its current status of 'less
developed country' (whih brings beneicial trade concession) to 'developing country' status
(the loss of trade concessions).
