The expanding agriculture frontier and the campesinos in
Santiago del Estero
Santiago del Estero is Argentina's least urbanized province and one of its poorest.
Compared with other parts of the country, it is marked by a somewhat different pro-
cess of colonization in whih its rural population stayed criolla - of indigenous and
European lineage - comprising, to a large extent, of campesinos , or peasants (Dur-
and, 2009). While historically highly marginalized in political, social and economic
terms, the peasant sector is relatively important to the province's economic capacity
(de Dios, 2006). Although official statistics do not provide explicit information about
this sector, the subcategories of the census category of 'small producers' can be used
to separate peasant from more capitalized small producers, and thus serve as a proxy
