A National Land and Water Audit in 2001, along with subsequent researh, has
established that:
• 40 per cent of the length of the river system is impaired (there is a marked reduc-
tion in the presence of macro-invertebrates).
• 95 per cent of the river system is despoiled (with high nutrient and sediment
loads).
• Habitat condition is degraded throughout the Basin, and there has been a signific-
ant loss of riparian vegetation.
