In-Depth Information
Figure 4.2 Cardiovascular morphological defects in
drug-treated zebrafish. Two dpf zebrafish were treated
with compounds for 24 h. Fish water and 1% DMSO-
treated zebrafish exhibited normal morphology. L: liver.
Black arrows: pericardial edema in verapamil-,
astemizole-, and terfenadine-treated animals. Red arrow:
ventricle swelling due to blood pooling in quinidine-
treated animals. Blue arrow: ventricle compression due to
atrial swelling in terfenadine-treated animals. Green
arrow: stagnant blood flow in the cardinal vein in
verapamil- and terfenadine-treated animals. (See the
color version of this figure in Color Plates section.)
4.5.4 Comparison of Human and Zebrafish
Cardiotoxicity
Drugs known to cause adverse cardiotoxic side effects in humans also caused
cardiotoxicity in zebrafish (Table 4.2). Note that clomipramine did not cause an
abnormal AV ratio, even at the highest test concentration.
