11.3.6.5 Zebularine
After treatment with zebularine, similar to results in rat
and dog preclinical studies, no toxicity was observed in zebrafish. No human clinical
trial data were available.
11.4 CONCLUSIONS
Results for this small, targeted study to assess acute drug-induced organ toxicity
showed good correlation between results in mammals and humans. Furthermore,
toxicity induced by 17-DMAG, HDAC inhibitor X, and SMA838 was irreversible.
Advantages of using zebrafish for toxicity testing include small amount of drug
required, easy drug treatment, short treatment time, visual assessment of abnormal-
ities in transparent animals without surgery, statistically significant number of
animals per test, and low cost.
