interactions between lectin and cells. Stredanska and coworkers [199] synthesized lactose-
modified chitosan for a potential application in the repair of articular cartilage by the same
mode. Kato et al. [200] also prepared lactosaminated NSCS (Figure 2.20) and its fluorescein
thiocarbanyl derivative as a liver-specific drug carrier in mice through asialoglycoprotein
receptor. Moreover, lactosaminated N -succinylchitosan was found to be a good drug car-
rier for mitomycin C in the treatment of liver metastasis [201].
Galactosylated chitosan prepared from lactobionic acid and chitosan with EDC and
N -hydroxysuccinimide (Figure 2.21) showed promise as a synthetic extracellular matrix
for hepatocyte attachment [202]. Furthermore, graft copolymers of galactosylated chitosan
with PEG or poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) and dextran were useful as hepatocyte-targeting
