methanol (2:1). Radioactivity was determined in aliquots from duplicate samples by liquid
scintillation counting. Cholesterol absorption efficiency was determined for each 24 h
period, and the two values for each rat were averaged.
Lipid analysis
: Blood samples were collected in heparinized tubes and the plasma was
separated by centrifugation (experiments 1-3). In experiment 4, blood serum was collected.
Liver was removed immediately after the rats were killed, rinsed, and weighed. Plasma
and liver lipids were extracted and analyzed for cholesterol and triglyceride. Feces were
lyophilized and pulverized. Gas-liquid chromatographic analyses of fecal, neutral, and
