Greenblatt. Work on the program began in November 1966 and within
three months it was ready to play in a human Chess tournament, the first
program ever to do so in any game. MacHack's first tournament result
was hardly spectacular—it played five games, losing four and drawing the
other one, for which it achieved a rating of 1243 on the U.S. Chess Fed-
eration scale and a lowly Class D designation from the federation. Work
