Part II
Fifty Years of Progress
In which the nascent science of Artificial Intelligence develops many
branches, each corresponding to a different human thought process,
during which development the state of the art in some of these
branches grows from novice to expert. Over a time span of only half
a century, technologies have been developed that can compose music
sounding like that of Chopin or Mozart, play Chess and other challeng-
ing games better than a world champion and demonstrate inventiveness
and expertise in many domains at the highest levels of human intellectual
endeavour. The combination of all these technologies places mankind,
today, at the start of an era of almost unimaginable achievement.
