1.2.2 Europe
The European Commission has been playing a leading and coordinating role
in nanoscience and nanotechnology development in Europe, at least from
the beginning of this century. The EU policy for nanoscience and technology
has been laid down in consecutive documents. Since 2002, nanotechnology is
explicitly included as a priority in the thematic programs on Nanotechnology,
Materials and Production Process (NMP) in the sixth and seventh Framework
Programs for research and technological development (RTD) (FP6, 2002-2006
and FP7, 2007-2013). Before, during the Fifth Framework Program (1998-
2002), the corresponding priority was called GROWTH (Competitive and
Sustainable Growth). Apart from including nanotechnology as an explicit
funding priority, the European Commission has also developed a policy for
nanotechnology.
On the European level, funding for nanotechnology RTD is available from
several sources, including
• European Union FP7 (NMP program and other thematic priorities).
• Coordination of national funding for RTD of member and associated
states through ERANET (FP6 and FP7; e.g., NanoSci-ERA, MNT-
ERANET, EuroNanoMed).
• In FP7 ERANET+ schemes, national funding can be topped up by
EC funding.
Apart from the European Commission, several EU member states also
invest in nanotechnology, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom,
Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Belgium, Austria,
Denmark, Finland, the Czech Republic, and Portugal.
1.2.3 Japan
In Japan, nanoresearch was one of four priority areas funded under the third
Basic S&T Plan 2006-2010. The budget for nanoresearch was 76.2 billion yen
(~€494 million) in fiscal year 2006, 78.6 billion yen (~€510 million) in 2007, and
86.5 billion yen (~€562 million) in 2008.
