Clothing and traditions
Dress in Thailand is generally conservative despite the tropical heat. It is a good idea to
bring loose fitting, lightweight clothing that breathes well and dries quickly regardless of the
time of year that you visit. Your best bet for the rainy season is to bring along a poncho and
a travel umbrella. Bring along a hat to protect you from the sun and plenty of sunblock.
Thailand is a Buddhist country with many traditions born from the religion that have made
their way into the culture. In Buddhism the head is seen as the holiest part of the body so
you should refrain from touching anyone's head. The feet however are seen as the lowliest
part of the body so be sure to keep your feet to yourself and not to move something with
your foot if you can avoid it.
In Thailand the national anthem is played every day at 8am and 6pm over loudspeakers. The
proper way to behave is to stand still and not talk while it is played as you will notice Thai
people do. It is a sign of respect for the country.
Thailand is a constitutional monarchy that also requires respect and it is illegal to insult the
monarchy even for foreigners. You don't want to find out what the inside of a Thai prison is
like so be sure to keep any political thoughts to yourself.
