In-Depth Information
Khao Lak
Located 60 miles north of Phuket is Khao Lak, a prime destination for families with its quiet
sandy beaches and many activities to entertain all visitors. The movie The Impossible took
place in Khao Lak and follows a tourist family that was separated during the 2004 tsunami,
though it has since been rebuilt so you will see few effects from the disaster. The tsunami
was devastating due to the lack of warning but today there is a sophisticated siren so follow
the crowds to higher ground if you hear a siren.
There are three areas that are referred to as Khao Lak which can be a bit confusing when you
are trying to find your accommodation. The main tourist area is Bang La On and the other
two are Bang Niang and Khuk Khak. With its peaceful beaches and nearby mountains Khao
Lak is a great destination for nature-lovers who are not looking for wild parties and active
nightlife though you can find a few bars here and there. There are resorts and accommoda-
tion options to fit nearly every budget and an abundance of hiking, diving, snorkeling, even
some surfing and golf.
