In-Depth Information
Ko Lipe
Seek out some of Thailand's best reefs on Ko Lipe with clear, calm water that make it great
for diving. The currents are tidal so the best time to dive is around the half moon twice a
month though with so many dive spots you can find low currents somewhere off of the is-
land at any time of the month.
Ko Lipe is one of 70 islands that is a part of Tarutao National Marine Park and because of its
inclusion in the park the reefs have been carefully protected. The high season is November
to May and it is easy to get to the island by speed boat or ferry from Pak Bara. Once you ar-
rive you can get around on foot, by motorcycle taxi and even beach hop with the long-tailed
boats.
There are four main beaches, the ever popular Pattaya Beach in the south, Sunrise Beach,
Karma Beach in the north and Sunset Beach in the west which is an ideal location for sunset
viewing. Near Sunrise Beach is a Chao Ley village, a group of sea gypsies that live on is-
lands.
While diving or snorkeling you can see many types of animals like whale sharks and manta
rays. The best diving sites are 8 Mile Rock, Hin Takorn Dukong, Ko Bu Tang and the Yong
Hua Shipwreck. In 1996 a fish-factory ship anchored near Ko Lipe caught fire and sank and
you can see the remains under now under 130 feet of water. The shipwreck is covered in
marine growth and inhabited by schools of fish. There are many other things to do on Ko
Lipe like go sailing, get a massage and get around by kayak. There are plenty of options for
food and drink around Bila Beach. It can be more expensive to lay your head on Ko Lipe
especially during the high season so if you are on a tight budget book well in advance to get
the cheaper budget rooms. There are plenty of guesthouses but the demand is high.
