Sukhothai
Midway between Chiang Mai and Bangkok lies Thailand's first capital, Sukhothai. It was
first established in 1238 by the Sukhothai Kingdom which once included much of modern
Thailand and parts of Malaysia and Myanmar. The ruins of the old city lie 7.5 miles from the
modern city, an easy day trip from the current city or you can find accommodation close to
the ruins. At the entrance to the park is the Ramkhamhaeng national museum, a worthwhile
first stop to see the artwork and exhibits from different periods.
For travelers who love to see how the locals live head to Sukhothai to get the real deal. Out-
side the city in rural Sukhothai you can experience a homestay with one of twenty families
in the village Ban Na Ton Chan, a town of 700 people. Get immersed in to daily life and
learn how to weave mud fermented fabric, cook local dishes and make furniture. The award
winning program was created by the villagers and it directly supports them and their com-
munity.
