Transportation
You have many options for getting around Thailand and all of the tourist destinations are
well connected. You can fly from the north and the south to Bangkok on one of the many
low-cost carriers like Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, Thai Smile and many more. There
are buses running from Bangkok to most cities in the north and south with many comfort-
able overnight buses for the long hauls. You can book your tickets a few days in advance
if you have a specific schedule but if you have more flexibility then you can usually go to
the station the day before or the day of and find plenty of options, particularly between the
popular routes of Bangkok to Chiang Mai and Bangkok toward the islands.
If trains are more your style then Thailand is a great place to hit the rails for very cheap.
Trains have three classes of cars: 1st with air conditioned sleepers for overnight trains, 2nd
class has seat and sleeper options some with air conditioning, and 3rd class which is per-
fectly fine for shorter trips. Most foreigners find that the 2nd class sleepers are perfectly
comfortable and a great way to experience authentic Thai travel. Backpackers on a tighter
budget should consider the 3rd class, it is a very clean and easy way to get around. You can
book your tickets at the train station though if you are traveling during the holidays then you
may want to book farther in advance.
