How to Use This Guide
This guide is split into three distinct sections. Each is designed to offer the most essential
information to both plan and maximize yourexperience. England is a relatively easy country
to travel in. The transport infrastructure is excellent, as is the choice of hotels and availabil-
ity of tourist information offices. This guide offers the shortcuts and need to know, without
polluting essential information with the unnecessary. It is designed with every type of visitor
in mind, and covers common interests and destinations. At the same time, it places a heavy
emphasis on helping visitors discover authentic England and sidestep overpriced overhyped
attractions.
What you won't find in this guide is very detailed information on individual hotels, entry
ticket prices, or establishment phone numbers. Instead, the general information is explained
and you're directed to the best sources of information. For example, there are thirty or so
small bed and breakfast hotels in the city of York. Almost every visitor will stay in one of
these “B & B's” and they all essentially offer the same experience.
Chapter 2 provides all the information you require to plan your trip to England. It discusses
classic travel routes and potential itineraries, when to go, how much it's going to cost, and
basic travel requirements. Whole section are dedicated to getting around and cutting down
costs. Public transport can cost 90% less if you book it in advance, so you need to know
about it before you arrive in the country. You'll also find information on the best ways to
travel between regions. This chapter also details the accommodation types and standard op-
tions for getting a good night's sleep.
Chapter 3 is about maximizing your experience and immersing yourself in English culture.
Things like what to eat, what to drink, remembering your manners, and staying safe. Strange
mannerisms and customs are what make England so great, so it's worth having an overview
before you land on the fair isle.
Chapters 4 - 8 provide detailed information about each destination. These chapters are di-
vided into five geographical regions. Every destination is presented in the same way. You'll
be introduced to the place and the experiences on offer. This quick succinct style should
provide enough information for you to make an informed decision about whether it's a place
to consider for your itinerary. Then the guide provides practical information to make your
visit a reality, including how to get there, travel essentials, and how to orientate yourself on
arrival.
