Prostitution
Thailand developed a reputation as a destination for sex tourism during the Vietnam war
whenGI'swouldvisitlookingforalittlerestandrelaxation.SincethenThailandhasbecome
nearly synonymous with prostitution and red light districts, and seeing older foreign men
with Thai women. Contrary to popular belief prostitution is not legal in Thailand but it is
widespread and authority figures are usually paid to look the other way. Child prostitution is
not ignored, however, and carries very heavy penalties if caught with a minor (under 18).
Culturally the majority of Thai women are quite conservative and not looking for a foreign
man to pick them up. There are many places around Thailand that you can find prostitutes
who are looking to sell their services, mainly in big cities and around tourist-filled spots.
Prostitution is not an ideal job for these women but it does provide with a much higher in-
come than other lines of work. The monetary incentive is very appealing for women who
support their parents and other family members so while it is far from ideal it is sometimes
the best option these women have.
If you do decide to partake in this type of tourism then bring protection and use it. Check the
person's ID to ensure their age. Most importantly be safe.
