Replace Footage - 'Where Did My Files Go?'
More often than not,
when you open a
project supplied to
you from another
designer, or open
your own project on a
workstation other than where all the resources were imported, you will be
startled by a nice little warning dialog informing you that your resource files
have gone AWOL. This can be extraordinarily disconcerting, and sometimes
plain scary, if you've spent many hours gathering data files for a project - now
After Effects is telling you all your files are gone.
Like many editing programs, After Effects does not embed the actual resource
files into the project. Links are stored identifying where every local and network
file resides. These links are what you see in the Project Window.
You can rest assured
After Effects has a
wonderful capability
to help you recover
any lost files' links,
seen as tiny Color
Bar icons in the
Project Window
along with the word 'Missing' preceding the last known File Path text string.
Double-clicking (or 'Ctrl
H') on a missing file link automatically opens the
Replace Footage File dialog box - a close kin to the Import Dialog box. All you
have to do is navigate to where the file resides, select it, and click 'Open'. In
addition to re-linking
the selected file, After
Effects tries to re-
establish any additional
missing file links
neighboring the
selected file. When it's
finished locating as
