Compositing Tips for
3D Animators
Prior to the bestowing of After
Effects upon the world of desktop
digital content creation, we 3D

animators were forced to use anachronistic compositing programs included with
their 3D animation programs. However, once I was exposed to the potent
elegance of After Effects, I abandoned those kludges in a mouse-click. But to
this day, many 3D animators still rely upon (struggle with) their old bundled
editing or composting software to accomplish their finishing.
Further still, some create all their visual embellishments within their 3D
rendering application, certain that it's the only way to achieve the purity of
image they seek. They apply distortion, depth-of-field, atmospheric fog, film
grain and more, all to produce the style they think can only be achieved within
the 3D animations program itself.
When it comes to making my 3D animations, I have one simple axiom: make
the 3D renderings as clean as possible, render them oversized, and keep the
ray tracing restricted to what has to be refracted/reflected - it's After Effects'
