Paint by Numbers
After Effects comes with two methods for Painting directly upon your canvas:
Non-destructive Bitmap Paint and Vector Paint. Whereas the Vector Paint tool is
only available with the Pro version, the Bitmap Paint Tool is standard. The two
Paint functions have similar capabilities and operation:
Paint - Permits direct bitmap-like Painting upon
images within the Layer Window in a non-destructive
mode where each touch of the Paint Brush is
individually adjustable. It offers many of the same capabilities as
Photoshop's Paintbrush, Airbrush, and Clone Tools, but it can do one
thing Photoshop can't: Animated Rotoscoping of your Paint strokes
and the brushes' attributes, with varied playback speed of the strokes.
With Paint you can:
Freehand draw upon any image, movie clip, layer, or Precomp
Erase to reveal the image you paint upon, or the layers beneath
Clone an image area from the same layer or from a different
layer - you can even offset the time from where the source is derived.
Vector Paint - Behaves like the Paint Tool; the brushes offer some
unique effects that the Paint Tool can't achieve. Each touch of the Vector
Paint brush is added to any previous illustration, preventing individual
modification of each stroke. The Vector Paint Effect Tool is applied in the
