PART IV
Deregulating Food Safety
The multinational meat industry is continuing to use its power and influence to deregulate food safety and
lobbying for the use of unsafe chemicals and drugs in producing animals. Food poisoning from tainted meat
has increased greatly since the industry dramatically increased slaughter line speeds and lobbied success-
fully to reduce the role of federal meat inspectors. Rather than using safe processing techniques and ensuring
cleanliness, the industry is substituting chemicals and technologies such as irradiation to remove deadly bac-
teria. Further increasing the negative impacts of industrialized animal production, the largest companies are
continuing to use antibiotics to increase growth on their factory farms, leading to the creation of antibiotic-
resistant bacteria. Public health communities are continuing to sound the alarm about the consequences for
human health if the efficacy of antibiotics is compromised. Industrialized animal production must end as
part of creating a safe and healthy food system.
