PART VI
Corporate Control of the Gene Pool:
The Theft of Life
Over the past forty years, scientists in search of personal gain and prestige have pursued manipulating the
genetics of life-forms ranging from bacteria and seeds to fish and animals. Largely at the expense of tax-
payers, corporations have gained control over the basic building blocks of life, threatening the integrity of
the gene pool and our collective food security. Essentially unregulated, biotechnology is moving far into the
realm of science fiction, as scientists actually seek to create life. Understanding the history and the inten-
tions of the prophets and proponents of biotechnology is critical to reining in these dangerous technologies
and creating a sustainable food system for the future.
