Erase a Hard Drive's Free Space
If you use an external or secondary hard drive to deal with files that contain private, sensitive,
or secure data, even if you delete those files and then empty the Trash, the files remain on
the drive for an indeterminate time. A person who steals or gains physical access to your
Mac Pro and has the appropriate disk recovery software can easily recover those files. To
prevent this, Mac Pro has a tool called Erase Free Space that can write over deleted files
multiple times, thus ensuring that they can never be recovered. You should run this tool peri-
odically to ensure the security of deleted files that contain important data.
