Add a Buddy
When you are using a non-iMessage account — such as Google or AOL — or when you are
using Bonjour, you send instant messages to, and receive instant messages from, the people
in your
buddy list
. Although you can receive and respond to instant messages from anyone
on the same system, before you can send an initial instant message to a person, you must
add the person to your Messages buddy list.
Messages enables you to maintain your buddy list by adding and deleting people, and it tells
you the current online status of each person on the list.

Messages prompts you for the buddy's account information.
