SITING A WIND PROJECT
Siting a wind project generally involves a number of steps, including selecting one or
more candidate wind project sites within a large region, identifying locations within
each site for the installation of wind monitoring systems, and permitting and leasing
the land.
Since the region to be surveyed is sometimes quite large (as large as a state,
province, or country), the site-selection process should be designed to efficiently
focus on the most suitable areas. This chapter discusses siting criteria and some
widely used tools and techniques. It also outlines steps to be taken following the
initial site identification, including field surveys, choosing appropriate tower loca-
tions, obtaining permits for tower installation, and entering option agreements with
landowners.
3.1 SITE SELECTION
The following are among the leading factors that might be considered in selecting a
wind project site.
