In-Depth Information
6. Explain the differences between range tests, relational tests, and trend tests. List
a few examples of each.
7. Explain the difference between QC and validation of meteorological data. Why
are they both important?
8. Define the distance constant for an anemometer. How can the distance constant
impact wind speed measurements?
9. Suppose you plot the ratio of wind speeds by direction recorded by two
anemometers from the same level, and the resulting angles where tower shadow
is apparent do not match expectations from the site information. What could be
the problem? What are some methods to determine the source of the problem?
10. Describe in physical terms how atmospheric turbulence can impact the observed
mean wind speed. Why do some anemometers measure greater wind speeds in
high turbulence environments and lower wind speeds in low turbulence envi-
ronments than an IEC Class I sensor? How about prop-vane anemometers?
11. Why is data averaging generally preferred over data substitution? Describe a
scenario where data substitution would be required.
