In-Depth Information
This document provides valuable feedback on equipment performance and data
completeness. For example, a review of past reports may indicate that although data
have been successfully retrieved, establishing and maintaining site communications
is becoming increasingly difficult. This may be the first indication of an impending
failure of the system's telecommunication system or power supply and suggests that
it is time to visit the site before data are lost.
7.6 QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
1. You would like to collect 10-min average and 2-s instantaneous data from the
same site. What would be an appropriate storage medium and data retrieval
method to allow this?
2. You are installing a measurement tower in a remote area where multiple com-
munication options (satellite, cellular phone) are available. Discuss the costs and
benefits of each alternative. Which would you recommend for this area and why?
3. In compiling your routine data transmission report, you notice that a site has
not communicated with the base software for 10 days. What potential problems
could cause this, which can be diagnosed remotely, and at what point does this
necessitate a site visit?
4. You are conducting a site visit to a remote location about which you do not
have any information on the data logger configuration. List the equipment you
would need to allow for data retrieval from any common logger configuration
as well as the appropriate backup equipment you would need on-site.
5. You have a wind monitoring site that can be easily accessed by the landowner
for data manual retrieval in all seasons. Discuss the pros and cons of manual
versus remote data retrieval, and develop a plan to ensure data integrity in either
alternative.
6. Many modern data loggers can be programmed to send data at preset time
intervals. Describe the relative merits of different data-transfer intervals, from
shorter (daily) to longer (weekly, biweekly, or longer), from both the equipment
and general monitoring campaign perspectives.
