Now that we are able to greet, introduce, and describe ourselves, we can talk about what we
do, our career. It is something that we often talk about and that sometimes, unfortunately, can
consume our lives. In Latin American culture, they are often surprised at how work is such
a big part of our lives. Helping each other out as friends and family is often more important
than one's individual career and success. Also, many times, nepotism can be prevalent in
Spanish-speaking countries. You will find that people do business with family or those that
they know and are comfortable with. People also often prefer to do business in person rather
than making phone calls or emailing. In this chapter, you will learn phrases to talk about
some of the basic professions of our society.
