Chapter 5
“Help Me Out, Please!”
This chapter is dedicated to those critical situations that we must be prepared for and the
conversations we must have. I will include phrases to help you if you are sick or have an-
other kind of emergency. It will also provide you with vocabulary to use in the bank, and to
talk about the time and weather.

Illnesses and Emergencies
This chapter will help you to survive those minor illnesses and any other emergencies such
as losing your passport, credit cards etc. Things that often seem to happen to us when we
are abroad and out of our comfort zone. Being sick and/or in trouble is no fun and can be
even worse in a foreign country, far away from family, friends, and familiarity. Being able
to communicate a little more to the doctors or emergency personnel in their language will
hopefully help. In Spain if you are sick and it is not too serious you can go to a centro de
salud (public health center) or to see your medico cabacero (family doctor). The healthcare
set up in other Spanish speaking countries will vary. You can always ask, ¿ Dónde hay un
Doctor? (Where is there a Doctor?) and hope to find a local to help you out. Of course, if it
is an emergency, go directly to a hospital. If your Doctor gives you a prescription, you will
find pharmacies almost everywhere with a green cross on their sign. Be prepared to pay the
Doctor en efectivo (in cash). Here are some phrases to help you survive those illnesses and
emergencies.
