Strangers who would not give the owner a glance will
drop to their knees to give their pet a smooch. It's a sad
commentary (to me) on what is otherwise a dignii ed and
logical culture.
On the street, in cafés, in shops, in restaurants, nobody
seems to mind a perpetually yapping miniature poodle though
a human being making an equal volume of disturbance would
be arrested. The most obnoxious evidence of these indulged
pets is their ubiquitous droppings that litter the otherwise
stunning Paris sidewalks.
Visitors complain that you can't look up at the architecture
because you're so busy looking down to avoid the dog poop.
Pet owners ignore both the French 'pooper-scooper' laws that
require them to clean up behind their animals and the white
dog silhouettes painted on sidewalks that remind everyone
to bring Fru-fru to the curb-side before he relieves himself.
Indulgent Parisians remain tolerant of what thousands of little
Totos leave behind. Yet they remark unkindly when Asian
children are allowed to pee in the gutter in China.
