dry cleaners, she then progressed to her line of perfumes).
She chose materials that would last for 20 years.
“Elegance,” she said, “is the contrary of negligence.” Today
you will still see her little black dress, her classic suits and
bobbed haircuts, from Paris to Hong Kong to New York. She
even instigated the fashion for a healthy tan.
The Parisians do nothing so well as dress, and it doesn't
require a huge wardrobe. A woman or man might own only
two or three basic outi ts, but each will be the best quality
and i t perfectly. They will feel great in them and that shows.
Women use scarves and jewellery to make themselves
endlessly original and fresh. Men can make a single fabric,
a tie, a shirt, look polished.
Paris is still fairly formal. You won't i nd a professional
French man or woman in jeans or running shoes. Only
tourists and the young. Nor would a French woman dream
of wearing shorts in Paris, though she calmly sunbathes nude

Dressing Hints
For women
Choose dresses, suits, skirts and blouses or well-i tted
pants in dark or neutral colours. Limit whites and
bright colours to one or two items: a scarf, a blouse,
a sweater. Wear dress shoes or boots, preferably dark,
that are comfortable for walking. An umbrella and
overcoat for rain.
In winter, have a well-cut wool, leather or synthetic
coat, dark or neutral, to go with everything, that resists
rain and wind. Carry a purse big enough for your
essentials, which closes i rmly against pickpockets.
Carry a second fold-away bag for parcels. If you must
carry a backpack, get an adult-looking one and don't
put anything valuable in the zip pockets.
