Queueing
The French understand perfectly well the concept of lining up and
being served in order. However, there is in France a curious desire
to resist following the rules. It's part of the way people express
their 'uniqueness'. And the French concede that an imaginative
person will always have a good reason to break the rules.
So when someone breaks the queue, or smokes where it is
forbidden, or parks in a no-parking spot, well, let him go ahead.
The i rst time you need to take advantage of this l exibility you
will appreciate it!
Dealing With Money and Getting Bilked
In many shops and in the markets, you will experience the
French system of paying. It seems quite inefi cient, but is a
rel ection of the French ambivalence towards money.
You inspect the products and make your choices with
one shop person, who then gives you a ticket. You take this
to the cashier. But don't try to hand this person the money.
Instead, put your coins or credit card down on the little mat
or counter intended for it. Take your change, your receipt
and then collect your goods. Sometimes you have to return
to the original sales clerk to get the goods. Even the modern
department stores retain this two-step approach.
There is nothing that beats outdoor market shopping in France. Enjoy the
variety and the entertainment, but watch your purse.
